Landscape Architects Celebrate Frederick Law Olmsted’s
190th Birthday With Tree Planting in Cherokee Park
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – (April 23, 2012) Volunteers from the Kentucky chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (KYASLA) will celebrate National Landscape Architecture month by planting trees in Cherokee Park Thursday, April 26.
The landscape architects chose April 26 in honor of Frederick Law Olmsted’s birthday. “Frederick Law Olmsted would have 190 candles on his cake this year,” said Mimi Zinniel, executive director of Olmsted Parks Conservancy. “What better tribute to his genius than to plant new growth and beautiful shade trees in his honor.”
About twenty volunteers will plant three Basswood trees, large canopy trees, that will eventually provide shade for park visitors. Cherokee Park is one of 18 Olmsted designed parks in Louisville.
Trees will be planted from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, April 26, in Frisbee Field along the Scenic Loop in Cherokee Park. Parking will be at Dog Run on Cochran Hill Road.
“Parks are incredible natural resources and instant memory makers for everyone who uses them,” said Sarah S. Kopke-Jones of KYASLA and Environs Inc. “As landscape architects we are naturally drawn to the outdoors and look forward to digging in to create a fresh new look for part of the Scenic Loop.”
